Why are disposable cameras so popular?
For some people, it’s the nostalgia factor. Whether it’s film, vinyl records or classic cars, the younger generation – what we often call the “instant gratification generation” – is harkening back to the originals in the respective fields. And they are discovering the joys of film photography – and sometimes the trials and tribulations.
That begs the question: if we all have these great digital cameras on our cell phones, why would we want disposable cameras? Lots of reasons.
Here’s one. You may be in an environment where your phone/camera might get damaged. Think of the beach, for instance. Granules of sand can get into your phone and run it, along with its camera. That’s why disposable cameras are so popular for beach events. Also, for pictures taken on boats – imagine losing your camera over the side of a boat or cruise ship. Just not worth taking the risk.
Since the booming days of the 1980s when disposable cameras were seen, and used, everywhere, even though the usage was reduced somewhat by the advent of digital cameras, disposable cameras have always enjoyed a niche market. The most common one is for wedding receptions and special events. But they’re also widely used at summer camps where you don’t want the use of expensive digital cameras or cell phones.
Also, since disposable cameras are enjoying such a renaissance in recent years, they have become a great marketing tool for companies as promotional products.
The cameras are lightweight and really easy to use. They’re so easy to use that even children can use them. They are small enough to fit into a purse or backpack – you don’t need a carrying case.
There is no end in sight. We think that disposable cameras will be here forever, especially as people are once again rejoicing in film photography.
